In this video, I am going to talk about my experience and sharing my review in selling my repeat pattern designs on Spoonflower. What is Spoonflower? It’s a custom fabric online marketplace with a great selection of different not only fabrics, but also wallpaper, and gift wrapping paper. Their digital print process uses water-based pigment inks and dyes in a more eco-friendly manner. Their concept is that independent artists/designers can make their designs available for sale at the Spoonflower marketplace and receive commissions when the custom repeat pattern fabric is sold. I signed up for Spoonflower in 2010 while living in the Netherlands. I had a great experience with their printing quality and shipment times while living in Europe and now in California. Here is my Spoonflower fabric shop: 🤍 As of this moment, I have 318 repeat pattern designs available on my Spoonflower shop some of them are color versions of the same design. To make your designs available you need to: 1) Save them in the proper format. 2) Upload them to the website. 3) Write the name, description, and tags. 4) Purchase a swatch to test the quality of the print. I always add batches of my repeat patterns at once and order swatch samples of whole collections of 30 pattern designs at once. This has been the most cost-effective way for me. Even with this investment in this part of my creative business and not a very active uploading schedule, I still earn a nice commission as a bonus to my other work earnings. The earnings have been growing steadily throughout these years and stay rather stable during the year if I’ve been adding new designs or not. I often receive requests to resize or recolor patterns for specific purposes. My patterns have been used on many DIY craft projects and I’m always happy to see them. I used my patterns from my California fabric collection in my tote bag project and a baby blanket for my daughter. As a big part of my work is creating custom vector repeat patterns for freelance client projects, I had quite a few of my customers come to me after finding my designs via Spoonflower. This is the story of my experience of 6 years+ selling on Spoonflower. I plan to do more experiments with Spoonflower this year so stay tuned for my updates :) If you have any questions or experience with this topic, please share them with all of us in the comments below. Learn more Spoonflower tips through my website: 🤍 In this short tutorial, I'll show you the cheapest way to proof your designs, ready to sell via Spoonflower.com There are FOUR ways to ‘proof’ your designs to sell on Spoonflower — but, by far the cheapest way to do it is to… Fill-A-Yard® Spoonflower’s Fill-A-Yard® tool allows you to proof up to 42 designs at once, on just one yard of fabric (as the name would suggest!) on either the Petal Signature Cotton or the Cotton Poplin. Being able to proof 42 designs at once means you can potentially proof an entire collection all in one hit! Spoonflower’s Petal Signature cotton currently retails at USD$19 a yard which means it can cost you as little as USD$0.45 to proof a design. Then, when the fabric is on sale — you’re going to save even more money, per proof! When you receive your Fill-A-Yard® project in the mail, you’ll be able to make all of your own sampled designs available for sale in your Spoonflower store. My experience with custom fabric printing, or on-demand fabric printing, and an honest review of Spoonflower, My Fabric Designs, and the other companies I've used. I made this video because I want people to learn more about fabric printing, and some of the possibilities, but also some of the pitfalls and downsides to be aware of. It's not a perfect science, and anyone who's interested should experiment to decide for themselves if fabric printing will work for their style of art and sewing. This was a difficult video to make, from a technical standpoint. I needed and wanted to talk about my Etsy business, but I don't want to promote it specifically. So I didn't share any of the fabric or designs that I've ever sold in it. I can't describe how much I want to get away from Etsy, as a company. But also, I don't consider the art and sewing I've done for Etsy to be particularly creative. I only designed fabric and made items that I knew would sell, following niche trends and popularity, and I'm bored with it. It's just not been creatively fulfilling as a career. That is why I've opened a new Spoonflower shop, and the designs I sell will be passion-driven projects connected to videos I make, which currently lean to historical inspirations, but we will see where it takes me in the future 😊 BTW, this video is not sponsored by any of the companies mentioned. 0:00 But Mom... 0:07 Storytime 3:33 How Fabric Printing Works 7:37 Fabric Printing Companies 10:22 Spoonflower vs. My Fabric Designs 17:36 Should You Buy Custom Printed Fabric? 19:48 Fabric Printing Q&A OF INTEREST Spoonflower shop - 🤍 Myfabricdesigns shop - 🤍 That blog post about making a repeating pattern: 🤍 Making my Chintz Vine dress: 🤍 FIND ME ELSEWHERE My second channel: https - //🤍youtube.com/channel/UCL1euaj3aLE9pdHHNXYV-Aw Instagram - 🤍 Pinterest - 🤍 MUSIC BY epidemicsound.com 1. As with every crafting skill, you have to start somewhere. Approaching your first sewing project can be daunting. One of the best beginner projects to attempt on your sewing machine is learning how to sew a zipper pillow, so that the pillow cover can be removed and washed. The zipper pillow is made from two pieces of fabric, straight line stitching and a zipper – it could not be more simple. And you get the benefit of making something new and fabulous to add to your home or to give to a friend. Love the design featured in this video? Get it here: 🤍 Want to create your own zipper pillow? Transcript: To make a basic zipper pillow you'll need a pillow form, upholstery fabric, matching thread, a zipper, fabric scissors, pinking shears, a seam ripper, measuring tape, and a sewing machine. For my pillow, I'm using a twenty by twenty-inch pillow form, cotton print fabric, and an eighteen-inch zipper. I'm using a basic Singer sewing machine which is perfect for beginner projects. Just make sure you have a zipper foot attachment. Begin by measuring the pillow form from seam to seam, and add three-eighths of an inch on each side for the seam allowance. If the fabric has a pattern print, then plan where the print will fit onto the pillow and cut accordingly. My cutting tip is to use pinking shears to keep the edges clean and fray-free. Place the right sides of the pillow fabric together. Sew a basting stitch along the bottom edge of the fabric using a three-eighths inch guide on your machine. A basting stitch is simply a longer stitch length which holds your fabric in place until the final stitches are sewn. To make it easy to remove, I’ll set my stitch to four. Measure and mark where the zipper will begin on both sides of the opening. Reset the stitch length to two point five, sew a stitch on both sides of the zipper, and secure with a reverse stitch. You will do this on both sides of the zipper opening. Remember to backstitch a little at the beginning and the end to reinforce the stitching. Open the fabric and place it face down onto the ironing board. Steam iron the seam open to prep for sewing on the zipper. Place zipper face down onto the seam and pin into place. Attach the zipper foot to the sewing machine and position the needle to the left. Starting on the right side of the zipper with an anchoring forward and back stitch, begin to sew around all four sides. When arriving at the first corner, set the needle in place and continue to make a clean corner and continue to stitch. Here’s a tip: back stitch both ends of the zipper as you sew to get that extra reinforcement. Once complete, trim the threads and carefully remove the basting stitch with the seam ripper. Open the zipper three to six inches. Place the right sides of the pillow fabric together, pin into place, and stitch along the remaining three sides of the pillow, using a basic running stitch. Here’s a tip: flatten the bottom seams before stitching to avoid a bulky corner. Trim the threads, then trim the corners of the pillow with scissors. This will stop the excess fabric from bunching in the corners once complete. Turn the pillow right side out and gently push the corners out with a blunt tool. I’m using a bone tool from my paper crafting kit. Finish by pressing all of the seams with a steaming iron. Insert the pillow form into your finished cover and voila! This is a perfect pillow cover for my seasonal decor. It’s simple to make and the cover can be removed for washing. 🤍
