Voice Over Coach Bill DeWees! This week, Chuck and Stacey J. get BUZZ-ed with Chicago-based voice actor, coach, presenter and author, Bill DeWees, who describes ways a voice actor can generate work, with or without an agent. He stresses the importance of having a great demo, specifically a “Demo that Rocks” by Chuck Duran. He shares his background in radio, business consulting and college teaching and what high stakes event catapulted him towards a career in voice over. Despite having more than a dozen agents in different markets, Bill explains that the majority of his work comes from using his marketing and sales background to build a successful voice over career in genres like technical and medical narration, e-learning and explainer videos. As a coach, he helps other talent build more contacts and offers some great tips for effective marketing including embracing technology and online opportunities. Bill speaks to what is necessary for being a key player in the industry, which includes having a head for business and being persistent. This video is Part 2 of an 8-part series from my Pro Voiceover Demo Coaching Session with the great Bill DeWees. In this series, you'll get an exclusive first-hand look at how he coaches students to take a script read from flat and sterile, to connecting with listeners on an emotional level. This is the second and final clip from the pro demo I’m sharing. This script and the Boost Mobile script are night and day difference. I was having a blast with the boost mobile script. It felt close to home and safe. I DID NOT enjoy doing this Ford read. I felt really unnatural and discouraged throughout. It was hands-down my least favorite read of the Pro Demo. I feel embarrassed rewatching it – cringing at my own awkwardness. But I know I’ll look back at this video next year and get a kick out of it. I couldn’t quite figure out how to nail the “confidence” bit Bill was directing me toward. I wonder if my lack of confidence in my ability to do the read and psyching myself out had something to do with that. You can see in the video I was getting frustrated with myself. It’s almost like my mouth wouldn’t do what I wanted it to do. Still, we pushed though it and Bill never once showed impatience. I’ve been practicing this read daily – listening back to my demo and trying to make this read style “automatic”. I wasn’t comfortable because I kept telling myself I wasn’t comfortable. But listening back to my demo, I’m still like, “wow, that’s ME?!” Of 4 clients who referred to my new PRO demo, 2 of them specifically referred to the 'Ford' read. Friends and family I shared my demo with also favorited that read. It's surprising what we think is best/worst, compared to what resonates with the client/listener.
