AMD just announced the new Mendocino 6nm APU With 4 Coes and 8 Threads Zen2 With An RDNA2 iGPU. This will be headed to best-in-class budget laptops but looking at what we have here this seems to be a 6nm refresh of the Aerith chip from Valve's handheld. As of making this video, we don't know the CLock speeds or the CU count on the RDNA2 APU but this is fantastic news for budget laptops for sure! Mendocino with rdna 2 6cu🤡
i just realize that this Mendocino it will be a disaster for gaming if what i find on internet is true. it has only 2 CU compare to 8 CU on the APU from steam deck
It's going to have only a single work group processor, i.e, 2 CUs. It will have 1/4th the power of the Steam Deck.
Unfortunately we now know that apparently it has no real GPU abilities, 1/4 the size of the Steam Deck.
This is exactly what I was waiting for ever since the RDNA 2 APUs came out.
AYANEO unofficially released the pre-order price of their new AYA NEO AIR PLUS (mendocino) handheld - only 1399 RMB (~$220). Unbelievable....😍
this apu will be a game changer to handheld pc small companies like gpd, aya and onexplayer to compete with steam deck's price.
Robert Hallock from AMD said they GPU on that one would be for basic task, not gaming. So, don't expect too much.
If someone can use this APU at a mini pc size like/smaller than larkbox
Nice to see them in laptops, but I'm more interested in seeing this chip in a small and inexpensive mini pc
am i the only one who thinks this will be the apu in the aya neo air?
I think performance will be decent enough in normal PC gaming for people interested in low-priced laptops, but it's emulation where these next APUs will be the stars of the show.
I want that chip in a 10 inch tablet
It's most likely not the Steam Deck APU. It has another project name manufacturing is different (SD: 7 nm; Mendocino: 6 nm).
It would be nice, if it becomes similar to the SD APU. I can imagine higher clocks for the CPU, which isn't hard. Maybe they'll use the same chip just to leverage production for the Steam Deck. On the other side it's even possible they use chips with defects, so it might use less CUs then the Steam Deck.
And there's RAM. I would be surprised if they used LPDDR5 and even then with 16 GB of it! Most likely it will be either DDR4 or just 8 GB LPDDR5. It has to be cheap, so it's hard for me to imagine it would only support DDR5, maybe it can only use DDR4/LPDDR4.
I would not hold my breath for the hope to reach Steam Deck performance, even with more power, which at least should be easy.
Good luck on your endeavors. Don’t let anyone get you down. We are all just trying to survive in a day where everyone hates everyone. You can do this.
Steam Deck clones from China incoming.
zen 2 is still amazing
Unfortunately these laptops won't have quad channel ram so would perform a fair bit worse
